Jan Bergh Barsomian
Williams, M.S., Ph.D.
Jan received her Master's degree in
1983 from the Veterinary and Animal Sciences Program at
the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In 1986, Jan received a
Ph.D. in Zoology for the
identification and DNA sequence determination of a repetitive sequence
in Acheta domesticus.
In 1985, Jan was awarded the university-wide Distinguished Teaching
Award. In 1987, after
teaching at the University of Massachusetts in Cell Physiology and
Histology, and Histology at
Northeastern University in Boston, and General Biology at Boston
College, began a Post-
doctoral fellowship at New England Biolabs. At New England Biolabs, Jan
researched
restriction-modification systems in bacteria and cloned and sequenced
the genes for these
systems. While at NEB, Jan contributed to many publications and holds
two U.S. Patents
with the company. Jan shares authorship on a publication with NEB
resident scientist,
Richard Roberts, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1993 for gene
splicing.
Since 1994, Jan has been a
professor in biology at Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts.
Jan teaches courses in Anatomy & Physiology, Genetics, Histology,
Biotechnology and Biology
for non-majors.
Jan is the Premedical and Pre-health professions advisor for the
college. Jan has written
numerous articles regarding general genetics and breeding of sport
horses and is
available for consulting, lectures and seminars.
